As an undergraduate at McGill University, I wrote this paper analyzing the French headscarf debate through the lens of laïcité, republicanism, and religious liberty. Focusing on the period from 1989 to the 2004 national ban on religious symbols in public schools, I explored the legal, cultural, and political dimensions of French secularism — particularly how they intersect with immigration, national identity, and gender equality in an increasingly diverse society.
